The Ageless Promise

07. Counting coins

Date: 26 Neth 4734 AR (3 months and 16 days since the fall of Mistreach)

Astrid, Sigurd and Freya decide to wait for the winter to pass in Kintargo, so that they can resume their journey by joining a caravan.

That night Freya has a new dream in which she is asked whether she feels ready; she answers no, and the dream ends.

After identifying the magic items in their possession (the magic necklaces given to them by Bjorn and Caryn’s weapon), Ragnar suggests getting rid of the weapon, and Freya throws it to the bottom of the sea. After that the group splits up: Astrid and Sigurd go to the Enchanted Quill, one of the city’s magic item shops, while Freya starts working on her potions.

Samira says goodbye to the group and leaves the city, pointing them to a contact at Kintargo Public Services in case they need information about the city (work, lodging).

Soon the three hear that two more Ulfar have just arrived in the city: Sif and Alrik are in one of the cafés closest to the city’s south gate, the Silver Cup, singing the story of their wanderings. The story is so gripping that word spreads quickly through the city, and Alrik even receives an invitation to present himself to one of the playwrights of the Kintargo Opera House. The group gets together and, after catching each other up (Sif and Alrik had left before the attack on Mistreach, so they knew nothing about Eaudrik Vallemar’s assault or the fall of the village), they decide together to rent a house in Kintargo and work there:

  • Astrid will work at the harbour
  • Sigurd will temporarily replace an injured player on the Kintargo Silver Crows basilisk team
  • Sif and Alrik will work at the Kintargo Opera House, ahead of the Kintargo Winter Arts Season
  • Freya, thanks in part to her acquaintance with Aurélie Moineaux, will sell potions.

They meet Miz Falounduche, a pearl dragonet who will be their landlord. They insist on paying the rent monthly and, after some persuading, the dragonet agrees.

The first month of downtime goes by, and the Ulfar try to settle into the city.

Astrid makes friends with the harbour workers and, given her knowledge of seafaring, also chats with the various ship captains passing through the port.

Sigurd opens with an excellent performance, which qualifies him straight away to play as a starter against the Egorian Devils, the basilisk team from Cheliax. Kintargo wins the first match, so the team moves on to the next round, and Sigurd becomes quite famous in the city, as well as getting to know the players of the opposing team.

Freya has no contact with others and works on her potions from home.

Sif and Alrik work at the theatre, but for lack of time their scenes will be played at the start of the next session.

During this first month they learn that the MHI is starting to sell toys and other accessories in Kintargo, that the ghost of Barzillai Thrune is said to haunt the city, and that the region’s silver mines have suffered a sudden drop in productivity.
