The Ageless Promise

17. The long way forward

Date: 23 Calistril 4735 AR (6 months and 13 days since the fall of Mistreach)

The group finishes exploring the underground complex deep in the Mindspin Mountains and manages to calm Julian and Dolly. The Ulfar obtain several documents belonging to the Iron Dragons, who used this place as a kind of secret base: a register of names; a note ordering them to suspend the search for Astrid (the Blood Dragons will take care of it) and stating that the Ulfar woman must be delivered to “the fort”; and the user manual for the strange lantern with a basilisk’s head that the group found among the remains of a recent fight in the corridor: this device is in fact an apparatus that uses the basilisk’s head to petrify people. The group also finds two vials of basilisk blood and a large dark geode, which they identify as magical. The Wolves cannot work out what it is but, judging by another note from the Iron Dragons implying that it is a particularly valuable object (even though they had no idea what it was either), they decide to take it with them. Finding that the corridor ends in a collapsed section, the five children of the North decide to take another passage that leads down through a hole in the wall, accompanied by the sound of the running water of a stream, which they find carries traces of primal magic. On their way, however, they find some large worms, which Freya identifies as middenworms. After fighting off and wiping out the crawling threat, the brave Ulfar remember that they left behind, in the Dragons’ base, the statue of an Ulfar warrior still holding a petrified book, so they go back to get it. Unfortunately nothing can be done for the petrified warrior, since several pieces of the statue are missing, but by using the basilisk blood as Alrik’s songs suggested, the group restores the book and part of the statue’s hand to their true nature.

The book is titled “The Way of the North” and is a diary kept by Thorfinn, recounting the deeds of the group of Ulfar who travelled to Vigil 36 years ago. It contains several powerful rituals, and some of its pages can be used as scrolls. After Alrik reads it to everyone, the book is entrusted to Sigurd.

After that the group decides to rest before going back along the river.
